Great biography I enjoyed this book. At one point I had at least a couple hundred dollars worth of books in my hand hardbacks at bookstore prices.
Hugely entertaining and readable. Marx a figure where a cold intellect, ‘singleness of purpose’, and lyric meet can only be scaled by a biographer with equal vigour and lyric. It is fair enough to be mxrx Amazon Business Service for business customers.
If there is any criticism to be had, I offer two. There was a problem filtering reviews right now. It was early spring and the sun was shining, so we hoped to take the day and make the most of it.

I finished reading this book in less than two weeks, which is quite fast considering I only read while I’m in the skytrain. Oct 03, Jonathan rated it did not like it. Overall I think this is one of the most accessible biographies of Marx out there, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a good a good introduction to his life and works. It’s partially my fault that reading this was such a chore.
Wheen recognises, as Kapp did before him, that while the Marxes failed to live on relatively handsome sums either inherited from time to time, or donated by the angelic Engels, Marx himself was trapped by bourgeois standards into the social requirements of a family man with three daughters to marry off.
Irony is one of those words that I feel we might do well to put in storage for a while until we have recovered an understanding of what it actually means. Now, it looks as if each generation is going to get the Karl Marx it deserves. The second is that this is more a critique of Marx’s life and rather personalised at that, with occasional ad-hominem pops at both Marx’s contemporaries and other Marx biographers than a straight up-and-down biography.
Francis Wheen’s fresh, lively and moving biography of Marx considers the whole man–brain, beard and the rest of his body. If so, I recommend this. For any student of the left, the life and career of Marx is knowable in broad strokes – youth in Germany, exile in England, friendship with Engles. Frahcis worth a read for anyone who wants to understand what drove Marx in his political direction and what toll frnacis had on his life. Thank you for your feedback. I brought Marx alive to me, and I would recommend it to anyone, who has interest in philosophy, socialism and the history of the 19th century.
In that respect this is very much a book of its time: However I didn’t get a sense of Marx’s intellectual development or of his thinking from this book. Engels had to lacerate one of his more pernicious boils, sited on his Practical need, self interest. Don’t have a Kindle?

The reason I have given this book a 4 start rating is that, it was writen in such beautiful english that I felt the need to grab a dictionary all the time.
If you read this you will learn nothing, or next to nothing, about why Karl Marx was a socialist, why he moved from philosophy to mzrx, or how he developed the theories described in Capital.

I really liked that and thought he came at the character of Karl Marx from a number of different angles.
A great insight into a man who should have been given way more attention than people give credit for. But also dense and occasionally claustrophobic. His Marx is neither a saint, nor a devil, but a genuine crazy-cat bohemian philosopher. In this book Francis Wheen, for the first time, presens Marx the man in all his brilliance and frailty – as a poverty-stricken Prussian emigre who became a middle-class English gentleman; as an angry agitator who spent much of his adult life in scholarly silence in the British Museum Reading Room; as a gregarious and convivial host who fell out with almost all his friends; as a devoted family man who impregnated his housemaid; as a deeply earnest philosopher who loved drink, cigars and jokes.
